The Museum of Antioquia is probably the most ambitious urban and cultural enterprise in Medellín in the past few years. It has become a revitalizing element in the city center which, for decades – as has happened in similar areas in other cities in the world – experienced an accelerated deterioration process, as businesses and residents moved to new areas. 

The museum operates from two branches: the old branch, where movies are shown and library services as well as workshops by the School of Arts and trades are offered, among others.  The new branch is located in the facilities formerly occupied by the old Palacio Municipal.  This construction, which has been totally renovated, offers a tour around bright spaces, corridors and gardens. There, visitors also find art shops and handcrafts, as well as a restaurant and some small cafés.

 

Plaza Botero

With an area of 7,000 square meters, Plaza Botero is another area of the Museum of Antioquia which is destined to events, concerts and fashion shows.  This square permanently exhibits 23 sculptures donated by the Antioquian painter.

 

Palacio de la cultura “Rafael Uribe Uribe”

With its florid gothic style, it occupies the old premises of the Antioquia Government Palace. It is no doubt one of the most representative architectural works in the city.  Its design and construction is  the work of Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts (1885 – 1939). Its Art Gallery, on the ground floor, hosts artistic exhibitions, and visitors have the opportunity to see them and also to take part in workshops and discussions around the topic.
